Lower-income Singaporeans can look forward to spending less on groceries and essentials in the new year.
FairPrice Group (FPG) announced on 30 December 2024 that it will mark Singapore’s 60th birthday in 2025 by offering double the discounts for Community Health Assist Scheme (CHAS) Blue and Orange cardholders.
From January to March 2025, cardholders can enjoy a 6 per cent discount every Thursday and Friday on purchases of up to $200 in a single transaction at all FairPrice supermarkets and Unity outlets across the country. This is an increase from the 3 per cent discount they currently receive.
The increased discounts are funded by the FairPrice Foundation, the group’s charity arm.
Upon checkout, eligible customers must present their CHAS cards for higher discounts. Customers must also select the relevant discount option at self-checkout counters to receive the benefit.
These enhanced discounts are FPG’s way of thanking Singaporeans for their support in raising $1.6 million to provide 600,000 beneficiaries with nutritious groceries and meals. The money was raised for the NTUC social enterprise’s donation drive, held from October to November this year, to help the underprivileged eat healthier.
Earlier this month, the group renewed its daily discount schemes for CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders, seniors, and Pioneer and Merdeka Generation individuals until the end of 2025.
According to Statistics Singapore’s Household Expenditure Survey 2023, food and grocery bills averaged 20 per cent of Singaporean household’s monthly budgets.
Believing that the amount spent by lower-income groups could be even higher, FPG’s move to increase the discounts for CHAS Blue and Orange cardholders with an average household monthly income of $2,300 or less represents its commitment to continued support as costs rise.
According to the group, the typical CHAS Orange customer profile is a young family with a child aged six to 12 months, while the CHAS Blue shopper is typically a two-person household.
Based on data from these customers who bought Price Drop Buy Now and Everyday Low Price promotional items in their December monthly grocery purchases, the group projects that CHAS Orange families can save around 17 per cent, while CHAS Blue households could see bill reductions of up to 30 per cent.
“As Singapore celebrates SG60, NTUC remains committed to our social mission of caring for our workers and ensuring no worker is left behind.
“FairPrice Group’s enhanced discount scheme for CHAS cardholders demonstrates our continued efforts to care for and help Singaporeans cope with rising costs. Together with our enterprise businesses like FairPrice Group, we will continue strengthening our social compact and building an inclusive and caring Singapore,” said NTUC Secretary-General Ng Chee Meng.
FPG Group CEO Vipul Chawla added that the higher discounts signal the beginning of its year-long celebrations to mark Singapore’s birthday.
FPG has also launched several schemes this year to help Singaporeans stretch their dollar.
Singaporeans enjoyed price freezes on popular seafood and exclusive promotions ahead of the Lunar New Year in 2024.
Members benefited from $4.5 million worth of NTUC Union and Link member deals during May Day.
From June to September, Singaporeans also reduced their grocery bills thanks to the Save Every Day campaign, which offered over 400 unique savings coupons worth over $2,000.
Meanwhile in January, June and October, Singaporeans saved on groceries with up to $8 worth of FPG return vouchers per CDC Supermarket voucher transaction.
Since 2019, FPG has returned over $900 million to members and the community through discounts, rebates, contributions, and donations.
